Belgian WWII M35 POW Uniform Set
Original Belgian WWII POW uniform set. The set consists of an original Belgian M35 jacket altered in captivity, a bonnet de police and a pair of American M1917 wool breeches. The items were found together and are offered as found.
The M35 jacket was manufactured in 1940. On the inside of the jacket, a name and markings have been written: “Quinaux 21.299 IV A N.O.” The number 21.299 probably refers to the wearer's POW identification number, while “IV A” most likely refers to Stalag IV-A, a German POW camp near Elsterhorst, Germany. Which housed POWs of various nationalities including Belgian prisoners.
The collar of the jacket has been altered, and the original collar insignia has been reattached to the jacket. Belgian tricolour ribbon has been added to the front chest pockets and shoulder boards. Some of the buttons have also been replaced with more luxurious officer-style buttons, something that may have been done before the war. A red triangle has also been painted on the back of the jacket. Various modifications and details that are commonly encountered on Belgian POW uniforms.
The bonnet de police is complete, although the liner appears to have been removed. Vague remnants of the liner can still be seen on the inside. The insignia was probably added to the bonnet during captivity. No other markings or writing can be seen on the bonnet.
The M1917 breeches were found together with the jacket and bonnet. American breeches were used by Belgian troops, but no Belgian markings or alterations can be seen on the trousers. Therefore, I cannot state with the utmost certainty that the breeches originally belonged with the jacket and bonnet. Various American markings and labels can be found on the inside of the breeches.
Overall, the items are in good condition, with some minor moth holes and general wear and tear consistent with age and use.
